Dances with Avatar
January 11, 2010 | Written by: Nick
As a comedian, you have no idea how much critique I get from people everyday - even on nights where my sets seem flawless - I still get a few - “I really don’t like that joke you did” or “I hate you - die!”… whatever. So if a non-paid/very low paid comedian like me can get ripped by people every other night (that’s just from my family for starters) - then why can’t I be honest about what I thought a well paid director/writer latest works?
So what did I think of AVATAR? One word - LAME!
That’s right people, I’ll be the first one to say that this movie was a total disappointment. My biggest hang up was the story. Not only was this a rehash/mashup of Pocahontas, Dances with Wolves, Wargasm, and a few other past storylines - the acting in this film was as dry as watching paint… dry.
I have to admit, I admired James Cameron’s unique vision when it comes to films. But he’s a bit of a hit and miss for me. THE TERMINATOR will always be my #1 Cameron’s film, followed by ALIENS and TRUE LIES. But that’s about it; his other works were decent and enjoyable to watch. And AVATAR is by no means an exception.
Lets face it - AVATAR is over hyped. I think the general population just loved the photo-realism cg and the borrowed “Roger Dean” style of the floating mountain/island. And I will be first to admit - that I truly enjoyed the visual. But what drove me nuts was the predictable storylines…
On top of that, the acting were really sub-par. I really didn’t give a shit about any of the characters. Simply maybe this had to do with the predictable storyline or the fact that I really didn’t like Sam Worthington performances from TERMINATOR SALVATION. Either way, his acting is pretty much 1 dimensional and transparent. Lets not even mention veteran actor Sigourney Weaver. She is one of my favorite actor, but what the hell happen in this film? Giovanni Ribisi? WTF was Cameron thinking? The only character that I totally got a kick out of was Stephen Lang. Not only did he made me laughed, but I totally dig his interpretation of his hard ass character. Even his performance was not strong enough to salvage the pathetic acting of the rest of the cast.
Even the CG Alien was disappointing… What the hell were they suppose to be? Giant Smurf Elves? Blue Cat People? Maybe this is the origin of the Blue Man Group? BTW… Is it me or did anyone else wanted to poke their eyes out? Overall - Cheesey!!!
And what the hell is up with the transplanted proverb “You can’t fill a cup that’s full.” …??? Not once in the movie did I see any of these Blue-tards use CUPS!!! Lets not forget the loopholes in the film… like with such advanced military weapons, they can’t afford a spy satellite or a predator drone? And from what I gather, these military forces are Mercenaries. (Whatever the backstory is, this is just what I interpreted or loosely understood.)
*Y A W N*
When I first saw the trailer, I pretty much had this movie pegged from the get go. And tonight, it confirmed everything I had thought about the film. Originally, I never had any intentions on going to see it in theaters… but since I needed to kill 3 hours of my time - guess tonight was better to do so.
Seriously though - 3 long ass hours? That’s why this film cost over $280M to make and it took 4 years to do so!!! Give me the script and I guarantee you that I could have chop that thing down to a good 120 minutes… then again, since it’s a rehash movie, 90 minutes should have ought to do it.
I read Roger Ebert’s review of the film… He’s as much as brainwashed as the rest of population for thinking that this is a great anti-war movie. Don’t even go on trying to tell me about the social commentary in this film - cause there isn’t. It’s a rehash of American History…
Speaking of which, why hasn’t Roger Ebert retired? I find a lot of his reviews awful and lately most of it seems like a kiss-ass review to the studios. Whatever!
Is this movie worthy of a DVD pick up to own? No not really. It’s a definite rental. But if you love the visual like I did, then BluRay is a must. Then again, there’s probably no-repeat value for me to watch this film at home. I’ve seen short films on YouTube that are better and a lot cheaper. Hell, give me $280M and I’ll deliver a better movie…

I agree that the story was highly predictable but I still enjoyed it nonetheless. Even if you didn’t like it it’s good that you saw it in the theater for the visuals alone. A DVD for a first watch wouldn’t have done it justice. Can’t wait to hear what you thought about “The Book Of Eli” now…
