See You In My Nightmares
October 20, 2009 | Written by: Nick
Kanye West’s long-rumored short film with director Spike Jonze, “We Were Once a Fairytale” finally had a release date. A short film starring the rapper Kanye West and directed by Spike Jonze has been taken down almost as quickly and mysteriously as it appeared. The film is a 11-minute short that depicts a “fictional” version of Mr. West acting drunkenly and misbehaving in a club, having sex with a woman, vomiting and stabbing himself in the stomach to unleash an inner demon.
From a technical perspective, the film opens up like a documentary style - hand held camera, with fast editing. Visually, the value of the production at the end of the film was pretty good. From the way it looks, I had a hard time trying to figure out if the gremlin demon was created via CGI or through STOP-MOTION puppetry. Either way, I liked it. Now the American Beauty scene of throwing up and bleeding rose petals was a bit cliche. Was that a metaphor to let people know that Kanye is really an all bubbly guy?
When I finished watching this film, I was truly disappointed. First off, I actually like the theme of the short film (after it was explained to me). However, the entire portion leading up to the “climatic” ending could have been shorten as quickly like the end scene. It just dragged on way too much and at one point I found myself just skipping a few seconds ahead… to the end. When I got to the end, I was like… WTF was that all about? The ending didn’t make any sense to me.
In fact, when I saw the ending… I had to painfully re-watch this short at least 2-3x cause I thought I had missed something crucial in the plot. Even then, the entire film STILL made no sense to me. WTF? I had to ask my friend to clarify the point to me.
However, as one article wrote it - “Art imitating life and life imitating art.”
Really? See, I thought that this was maybe a spoof about Kanye. But given his recent idiotic antics at the VMA, I thought that this was some sort of an biographical spoof. Not! According to a post on Spike Jonze’s blog, the film, which screened at the Los Angeles Film Festival in June and started off as a video for the Kanye song “See You in my Nightmares” then became the short film titled “We Were Once a Fairytale”, the title is taken from the song’s lyrics. Which makes me think… is this a marketing ploy to promo Kanye’s song? Don’t get me wrong - the music was actually enjoyable to listen to (Kanye West featuring Lil Wayne), but the music video could have been done better. (I don’t want to get involve on the video itself, but what do I know really?)
The aftermath of the short film that popped up on kanyeuniversecity.com over the weekend, has since been pulled; a message on the Web site said only, “SORRY I HAD TO TAKE IT DOWN :(” Representatives for Mr. West and Mr. Jonze did not immediately respond to requests for comment. In reality, all it does is make the movie so hyped up that by the time you see it your only possible reaction is… “huh?”
Overall, the over-hype definitely works for his this film, whether as a marketing plot for his music or maybe his “apologetic” make up for his eccentric outbursts (say, the Taylor Swift incident?).
“We Were Once a Fairytale” shows Kanye making a royal ass of himself … but what is he really trying to tell us? Given the video’s message of conquering your inner demons… you would think the demon gremlin could be a little more menacing looking instead of say… a wet rat fur-ball gremlin?
Of course, all of this could simply be a further display of West’s ego masquerading as art… then again, it’s the alcohol that’s talking…

Fuck Kanye West, he is a bitch! lol
In my opinion, the man has lost all sense of reality both in his work and his life. His 15 minutes of fame is GONE!
Love,
Mahma

I guess it’s better than self-flagellation…..or flatulation… Actually, No……it isn’t.
