Gimme Some Skin!! You Jive Turkeys!!
November 9, 2009 | Written by: Nick
OMG! This has got to be one of the best underground flicks of 2009! Of course, I’m a bit bias being a fan of Michael Jai White. Honestly though, even if I wasn’t a fan, this was one hilarious time-period film. Hard to believe that the 70s was 40 years ago - seems like yesterday.
What I love about this film was the take on the blaxploitation genre. All the little details and staged “problems” were brilliantly put together to give you that feeling that you’re actually watching a film THAT WAS MADE in the 1970s (from the boom-mic to the stand-in doubles to the genius 16mm reversal color film). The costumes, props, and music were impressively created to match the time period. I totally love the music in the film. What impressed me more was that the entire soundtrack was recorded with analog equipment (just like it was back in the 70s).
Now - the story is a bit of a cheeseball full of stereotypes, but I already knew that going into this film, so my expectations were already offset. However, I was more into the martial arts ass-kicking smooth talking womanizing character of Black Dynamite - a bit of Jim Kelly, Fred Williamson and Richard Roundtree. The supporting cast were equally humorously enjoyable to watch.
My favorite scene was the uncovering plot of the Anaconda story… I cracked up so hard during that entire scene. As obscured as it was with varying 6-degrees of relations, it was well played by the entire group. Of course, what’s a blaxploitation film without “the man” to fight against!?
The climatic ending reminds me of a far fetched Shaft scene, battling it out in the “honky” house…
Overall there’s not much about this film that you should walk away with - other than a belly full of chuckles.
